Removing and Preparing the Skylight

The first step in installing pyramid skylights is to carefully remove them from the crate and place them on a flat surface. Next, install the gasket into the base frame, taking care not to stretch it in areas where a weldment interferes. Trim the gasket away from the weld and trim the arrow section from the gasket to ensure setting surfaces are even. This will allow the gasket to butt up against intersecting gaskets smoothly. Install the closure caps using the same method.

Inspecting and Preparing the Roof Curb

Before installing the skylight, it’s important to inspect the roof curb for proper dimensions and fit. Refer to the approval drawings to confirm the outside curb dimensions that the skylight was fabricated to fit. Measure the actual outside curb dimensions to ensure they will accept the skylight frame. Turn the skylight frame upside down to access the underside, and apply a bead of urethane sealant around the entire frame. Press a sill apron firmly into the sealant, apply additional apron sections, and seal all lap joints. Place the skylight frame and apron assembly squarely on the roof curb and pilot drill the roof curb to accept the proper fastener. Apply a shot of sealant used on the roof curb prior to applying the fastener. Apply two glazing bumpers in each bay at quarter points around the entire perimeter of the frame.

Installing the Glass Assembly

Open the glass crates and confirm the laminated surface of the glass assembly by looking at the edges and finding the double-thickness detail. Lift the glass assembly and place it in the skylight frame with the laminated surface on the interior of the skylight. Use a good quality suction cup to handle and place the assembly in the skylight frame. Insert a foam backer rod between the bottom edge of the glass and the glazing support sill of the frame. Cut or break the rod if a glazing bumper interferes.

Apply wide tape to the glass surface about 1/4 inch up from the bottom edge and then to the top of the glazing support sill. Apply a bead of sealant to the area where the backer rod was installed, and make sure to cover the area well. Use one of the extra glazing bumpers to squeegee the silicone sealant smooth, forcing excess sealant onto the tape surface. Remove the tape and discard.

Apply the hip caps by first applying a bead of sealant to the mitered edge of the cap. Repeat for each additional cap and apply the cap to the frame assembly. Bring the bottom end up to touch the outside edge of the glazing support sill and visually line it up to the center of the peak to ensure pre-drilled holes line up with the screw groove of the base frame. Use two number 14 stainless steel screws with a sealed washer installed into each pre-drilled hole in the cap. Secure until the sealed washer compresses.

Insert hip cap closures by lightly hitting them with a non-marring mallet. Apply a generous bead of sealant to the underside of the peak cap and place it evenly and firmly to the peak of the skylight. Apply a 2-inch by 2-inch bead of clear silicone to the top intersecting corners of the hip caps just under the lip of the cap edge. Repeat until completed. The assembly and installation are now complete, and you can enjoy the natural light brought in by your pyramid skylights.
